Built the official MTV VMAs Discord server in 2020 — a virtual award show venue for one of music television's biggest annual events, peaking at over 100,000 members in direct collaboration with MTV staff.
In 2020, when the MTV Video Music Awards could not be held in their traditional in-person format due to COVID restrictions, I built the official Discord server that became the virtual venue for one of music television's most iconic annual events. With over 100,000 members at its peak, the server was one of the largest event-based Discord communities built during the pandemic era.
The server is no longer public — it was built specifically for the 2020 VMAs and has since been taken offline. Gallery images from the server are included below.
The Challenge
The 2020 MTV VMAs needed a digital venue capable of hosting a six-figure audience in real time around one of music television's biggest annual events — during a period when the entire entertainment industry was improvising. The server had to be brand-safe, operationally sound, and capable of handling massive simultaneous traffic while still feeling like an actual event experience rather than a generic chat room.
The Approach
I worked directly with MTV staff from the start, treating this as a virtual event production rather than a community build. That meant designing the server architecture around the VMA's actual programming structure, building moderation and operations systems capable of handling 100,000+ members during a live event, and ensuring the MTV team was trained and ready to participate in managing the space in real time alongside me.
The Solution
Built the complete Discord server infrastructure for the 2020 MTV VMAs — channel architecture organized around the event's programming, role hierarchy, permissions, bot configuration, and real-time moderation systems designed for a six-figure live audience. Worked directly with MTV staff throughout the build and during the live event. Managed the server and coordinated with internal teams during the broadcast and surrounding period. Created training documentation, moderation policies, and operational guides for MTV staff. Delivered a fully operational virtual award show environment that peaked at over 100,000 members.
The Results
The 2020 MTV VMAs Discord served as the official virtual community space for one of music television's most watched annual events, reaching over 100,000 members at its peak. The server operated successfully through the live broadcast and its surrounding period with MTV staff trained and actively involved in operations. The server has since been taken offline — it was purpose-built for the 2020 event.
