Built and launched a Discord community system for the Chicago Bulls, supporting team readiness, moderation structure, and long-term internal ownership.
On May 21, 2021, I launched the official Chicago Bulls Discord server from scratch — building the complete foundation of what is now a 9,000+ member community for one of the NBA's most recognizable franchises. I remain an active administrator to this day, providing ongoing support to their team whenever it's needed.
The Challenge
The Chicago Bulls needed a Discord presence built to the standard of a global sports brand — structured, safe, scalable, and ready to hand off to an internal team that had never managed a Discord community before.
The Approach
I approached it as three phases: build, manage, and hand off. The server architecture had to be right from day one. Early operations had to be stable enough that the internal team could observe and learn in a live environment. And the handoff had to be complete enough that they could run independently — with me available in the background as a permanent resource.
The Solution
I built the full server infrastructure — welcome channel, all community channels, role hierarchy, permissions, bots, and a support ticketing system. Alongside the technical build I created a complete operational package for Chicago Bulls staff: community guidelines, moderation policies, scenario-based training materials, staff playbooks, and escalation procedures. I then trained the Chicago Bulls team directly on Discord platform operations and community management fundamentals, running them through real situations until they were confident managing the space day to day.
The Results
Launched May 21, 2021, then stayed actively involved through the community's growth before handing day-to-day operations to a trained internal team. The Chicago Bulls Discord has since grown to over 9,000 members. I continue to serve as an active administrator, providing support whenever it's needed.
